1. Choose the right time of day.

The best lighting will be 2 hours after sunrise or 2 hours before sunset. This is when the light is the softest and most flattering. This is called the golden hour. You can also do river sessions at other times. The lighting just may be a little trickier. Your best bet is to choose a photographer who is experienced in lighting and locations in the middle of the day and can use off camera flash for trickier situations.

2. Bug spray and sunscreen are your friend.

Those pesky insect friends sometimes gather at the river, or on the trip down to the river. So if you are planning to go somewhere there might be bugs, make sure to spray yourself down.  Sunscreen is also a must if you are going to be in the sun for a while.

3. Use Waterproof Mascara

I think this one speaks for itself.

4. Choose the right hair style.

Pretty curly, flowing hair is beautiful. If it gets wet, it won't get ruined as much. Consider a flower crown. It add a whimsical element to the session. Some river spots can have a lot of wind, so top knots or half up styles can help you battle the uncontrollable wind.  Beautiful flower bouquet and floral crown provided by Christine Savio @Eureka Flower Boutique

5. Bring a towel.

This will come in handy to dry off afterwards, or use in the car so you don't get your seats wet.

6. Hydrate

It can get really hot at the river so be sure to bring something to drink. Water is the best option for those ultra hot days. Consider beer or champagne for a toasting shot if you are doing your session close to sunset. A nice drink at the end of a session can be quite refreshing.

7. Bring the proper footwear.

Barefoot will probably be your choice for the actual photos, but make sure you bring a  good pair of shoes for the hike down to the river and the hike out when you are wet.

8. Be prepared to get wet.

This is the best part of river sessions! The chance to cool off , splash around, and enjoy the elements. Water is refreshing and invigorating.

9. Long, flowing dresses are excellent choices

Flowy, long dresses are a great choice. They can be used as a prop for spinning and splashing. They are flattering, and they also catch the wind beautifully. They can also handle getting wet and still look good.

Get some playful shots of you splashing the water or kicking your feet. Have fun with your river session. When water catches the sun, it sparkles beautifully.
