Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. This has been a tradition since the victorian era. The tradition is believed that if you wear all these things together the bride and groom will have good fortune throughout their marriage. These items should be from the both sides of the family. This is a way to join both sides as one.
2. Sixpence (penny) in the bride’s shoe. This is actually the final part of the something old, something new, something borrowed something blue and a sixpence in your shoe. It is thought that by placing a penny in the bride’s shoe that you are ensuring wealth for the couple. The penny is supposed to be saved by the bride and given to her daughter on her wedding day. What a fun tradition!
3. Saving the top of your wedding cake. This tradition goes back to the 19th century and instead of saving the top of the wedding cake for your first anniversary it was saved for your first child’s christening. However, now people wait longer to have children so it has been changed to be eaten on your one year wedding anniversary.
4. Carrying the bride over the threshold. This tradition has a little darker meaning. It started because the bride would not want to leave her father’s home so her husband would have to drag her into the home. Now we do it as a sign of good luck and it is so romantic.
5. Cutting the cake. This tradition is a timeless one and one not to skip over. Besides the amazing photo opp it is also a special moment shared between the bride and groom. Don’t forget to keep your cake knife as a special memento.
6. Taking a moment during the ceremony to remember loved ones. There are so many ways that you can remember the loved ones that have passed away. A few ideas include, taking a moment of silence or having seats reserved with photos of those loved ones.
7. Wedding favors. These can range from picture frames to bubbles. It is a tradition that your guests will remember your wedding by.
8. Groom’s cake. This tradition started in the 17th century and the groom would pass out fruitcakes to all the guest at the end of the night. Now groom’s cake has become a staple piece in many weddings and a gift from the bride to the groom. These cakes are usually more about your personality as a couple or the groom’s interest.
9. Guest Book. Having a guest book is a way for the bride and groom to remember who attended their wedding and for guest to write a sweet note. Traditionally these books were just pages for guest to sign their name and maybe write a note. However, now people are having more fun with them. A few ideas include using a canvas, having a fingerprint tree, signing wine corks for a vineyard wedding or having a photo album for the guest to sign.
10. Boquet and garter toss- This is a tradition that cannot be missed. Believe me all the single ladies would be very upset with you. It comes from the English tradition that guest would try to rip a piece of the bride’s dress or take her flowers in order to get her good luck. Now it is to see who the next lucky lady will be.
